Emotions were the main topic of our meeting at the Bookworm Club. We learned how to recognise and show different feelings, such as happiness, anger, sadness and fear. We listened to short poems about emotions and drew pictures of our happy moments to cheer us up in bad moments.

Windowcolor

Windowcolor is a method of decorating every smooth surface, such as glass, mirrors, windows and so on. It successfully imitates stained glass because it allows the sun to shine through the pictures.

Bookworms in Portugal

During today's meeting at the Bookworm Club, we visited Portugal, the country of Henry The Navigator. We learned a few traditional songs and games, watched a presentation about Lisbon, and read a legend about the Rooster of Barcelos, which is considered a symbol of the country.

Decoupage

Decoupage is the art of decorating an object by gluing coloured paper cutouts onto it in combination with special paint effects. The participants of our workshop used a shabby chic technique to give wooden bookmarks rustic or vintage look.

Last Meeting in the Bookworm Club

It was our last meeting before summer holidays but we had lots of fun as usual. Although the Mother's Day had already passed, the Father's Day is still ahead of us, therefore we made little souvenirs for our parents.

But Mums and Dads were not the only ones to receive presents. At the end of the workshop all children received diplomas, books and toys. Special thanks were given to Kuba and Dawid who had collected the largest number of the Bookworm Club stamps.

This beautiful basket in the picture has been made from paper wicker. After being painted and varnished the paper craft imitates natural wicker.

Our Saturday's meeting in the Bookworm Club was yet another opportunity to introduce the children to the life and work of our greatest composer, Frederic Chopin.
This time we learned what sounds, rhythm and melody are, and we tried to make our own pieces of music, using our hands and voices. We also read a few funny stories about young Frederic from the book entitled Chopin in the Eyes of Children, and listened to Chopin's mazurka, polonaise and variation.

Bookworms in the Amazon Rainforests

Curupira, the Spirit of the Forest, was our guide to the Amazon Rainforests. We met Indian tribes and many species of animals living in the jungle. We also found out why the rainforests are so important and how to save them.
At the end of our journey Curupira told us a story about a great kapok tree, home to many living creatures, which had been saved from cutting by its inhabitants.

Poetry Recitation Competition

The sixth edition of our annual Poetry Recitation competition took place on 22nd March, with participation of over thirty second- to fifth-graders.
All competitors were expected to present pieces of poetry of the highest quality and suitable to their age. The jury led by Mr. Dariusz Poleszak, the actor of the Stefan Jaracz Theatre in Olsztyn, chose the best contestants.

Spelling Competition

Nine sixth-graders took part in our annual spelling competition, organised on Thursday, 25th February, on the occasion of the International Mother Language Day.

The participants have had to write the dictation and do the test checking their knowledge of the Polish language, for instance in correcting grammar mistakes and completing popular proverbs.

Due to low level of knowledge presented by the participants, the jury have decided to award only one person, Aleksandra Gorczyca. The winner has received a book prize.

Fairy Tale Wednesday. London Tour

The Fairy Tale Wednesday may be a good occasion to learn about other countries and cultures. This time we invited our guests from the ABC Nursery School to five o'clock tea with Queen Elizabeth II. To meet the Queen, the children had to complete several tasks, e.g. find the Buckingham Palace and other London highlights on the map, and listen to the story and answer a few questions about the text.

Saturday's meeting in the Young Readers Club was dedicated to one of the oldest and most popular traditions of the Polish culture, called Andrzejki or St. Andrew's Day in English. It is believed that on this occasion, celebrated usually on 29th November, the future can be revealed to all unmarried women. Therefore, several magical customs take place on this day, such as pouring hot wax through a key hole into cold water (when a wax figure is ready, the shape of its shadow cast onto the wall will unveil future events), or checking who will be the first to get married by arranging shoes one after another until one of them first crosses the treshold.

Fiesta Mexicana at the Bookworm Club

The atmosphere during our last meeting at the Bookworm Club was very festive. On that day we made a virtual journey to Mexico. We learned traditional songs and games, read a Mayan story, tried polvorones, and smashed the pinata full of candies. At the end, all members received certificates and books.

A Journey With The Little Prince

The workshop has been prepared and led by Aline, Marlies and Paula. In order to receive their Certificates of Excellency in space travel, the children divided between three 'cosmic stations' operated by one volunteer had to take part in several activities.

Public Speaking Competition

2nd Public Speaking Competition appeared too difficult for the third- and fourth-graders. The competitors had to present one story of the Warmia and Mazuria province. The time of a presentation could not be longer than five minutes. Unfortunately, all presentations were very short and the jury decided not to announce the winner. However, all competitors received diplomas and books to get motivated to further work.

Four teams took part in the Fairy Tale Competition organised on the occasion of Fairy Tale Days. In the first round the children had to complete several tasks connected with the most famous stories, and then each group had to answer five questions. After the second round two teams received the same number of points and a runoff was needed to announce the winner.
Since candies served as 'points', all teams collected enough sweets to divide between their members.

The Hat Dance and beating the pinata, along with traditional Mexican songs and games, were the main attractions of the Children's Day party in our library. Our guests could also try polvorones (wedding cookies) and arroz con leche, a delicious dessert made with rice, milk and cinnamon.

Today's workshop was dedicated to iris folding. The children and adults who participated in the meeting enjoyed that relatively simple technique in which ready-made patterns cut out of a sheet of paper are therefore filled with strips of paper in various kinds, colours and even textures.

3rd International Fairy Tale Days

On this occasion we are organising competitions and special workshops for children.
Everyone will also be able to become one of the well-known characters of fairy tales, such as Peter Pan, Aladdin and Jasmine, Bella, or Winnie-The-Pooh.
For third- to fifth-graders we have prepared a public speaking competition.

8th National Week of Reading to Children
National Week of Reading to Children, held annually in June, is a part of the All of Poland Reads to Kids campaign led by the ABCXXI Foundation.

On this occasion we are offering several workshops for children and adults:

A Journey with the Little Prince
— a workshop led by the library volunteers from France, Spain and Austria. For children aged 6 to 11 years.
Read and Play — a read-aloud workshop for parents, grandparents, teachers, students and those who want to learn what and how to read to children. The meeting consists of two parts, including a practical workshop on basic art techniques than can be used to extend a reading and listening process.

Fiesta Mexicana at the Bookworm Club — our last meeting before summer will be full of fun and music. All children and parents will be able to try on a traditional Mexican outfit and taste delicious desserts, arroz con leche and polvorones.

Friendly Touch

Today's meeting in the Bookworm Club was prepared and led by Agata Półtorak, a children's book writer and illustrator.
Soon her book entitled Szmatki z tęczowej szufladki (Scraps From the Rainbow-hued Drawer), which is a collection of short poems with a therapeutic message, will be published by Gdańskie Wydawnictwo Pedagogiczne. In the interim, she has presented a few pieces of writing from this book, which are meant to create a special bond between children and their parents by the use of simple massaging techniques.
However, before the parents could check how it works in practice, they created a map of a good touch together with their children. Making finger puppets, which can both be great fun for children and serve as a tool in activities including relaxing massage in either home or school/kindergarten environment, was the last stage of the workshop.

Today all Polish librarians have celebrated their day. To commemorate the Librarian Day on our blog, we are presenting the most famous representatives of our profession:

Barbara "Babs" Gordon, also known as Batgirl, the PhD in library science and a head of Gotham City Public Library.

Flynn Carsen, addicted to learning perpetual college student, an owner of 22 academic degrees, an avid bookworm and a librarian of the Metropolitan Public Library in N.Y. Sherlock Holmes and Indiana Jones in one amidst librarians. Intelligence and witty sense of humour are his best features that allow him to survive in all dangerous situations he experiences as a member of a secret ancient order of librarians.

Cosmic Fashion

A group of the six-year-olds took part in an art workshop organised as a part of the project run by the Olsztyn Public Library and the Equal in Europe Association, and co-funded by the local government.
The main open-air event, Cosmic Picnic, will be held on 16-17 May. Everyone is invited to participate in competitions and a cosmic fashion show. Children and adults may also sign in for special workshops that will be given in our library beforehand.
